The Abuja Environmental Protection Board has concluded arrangements to commence the recycling of solid waste in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Director, Mr. Isa Shuaibu, said this in Abuja on Friday while supervising work at the Landfill site facility for waste disposal located at Mpape District in the FCT.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the board had procured two waste transfer trailers with 40-tonne capacity each.

Shuaibu said the procurement of the vehicles marked the beginning of the waste recycling programme as well as the “Waste-to-Power” initiative in the FCT.

He stated that the waste transfer trailer was equivalent to six waste evacuation trucks, adding that the new facility was capable of generating employment.

According to him, the new facility will also reduce the volume of emission from the old trucks on the road.

The director said the traffic jam on the road would also be reduced with the new trailers.

“The arrival of these facilities marks the commencement of the waste recycling programme in the FCT and this programme will take us a long way as it is aimed at creating job opportunities.”

Shuaibu assured residents of efficiency in waste management in the FCT, noting that with the new facility, waste would become scarce commodity in a short time.

He further said the present facilities would manage waste from neighbouring states of Nasarawa, Kogi and Niger.
